Tungsten Rings
Over the past few years, tungsten rings have grown in popularity and there are many reasons why. These rings, which are also referred to as tungsten carbide rings are made from mixing powdered black carbon and powdered tungsten, then using very high temperatures in the presence of hydrogen to heat the powders together. This forms a very strong bond that makes the rings ten times harder than eighteen karat gold.
The hardness of tungsten rings allows them to be extremely scratch resistant as they are generally polished with diamonds. Many manufacturers stand by the fact that these rings are scratch resistant by giving guarantees. Not all of these rings are equal as there are lower quality rings made with a cobalt binder, which can cause allergic reactions and create discoloration on the ring. Quality tungsten rings are made with a nickel binder.
