If you’re thinking of investing in oil-why not consider liquid natural gas (LNG)?

Oil is running out. Oil prices are rising fast. Extracting oil from other sources is possible. But LNG is a growing cleaner source of energy that looks worth investing in right now. Compared to oil, the world still possesses huge natural gas reserves .

The rising cost of oil is making natural gas sales much more appealing – in many oil fields the gas is simply burnt off into the atmosphere as a waste product. That is 2.5 TRILLION tons per year which could be bringing in revenue and providing energy.

Developing countries like Nigeria and Bolivia are becoming particularly aware of this. And they are forging links with big multinational companies who can provide infrastructure

Already, natural gas use is climbing. Liquid natural gas trade is growing much faster than oil trade. And so are natural gas prices, from two to three years ago. The changeover to greater natural gas use is just beginning!

Natural gas is clean burning and easily liquefied by cooling down to 1/600 of its bulk as a gas, and then becomes easily transportable as LNG via insulated pipeline or tanker.

Already, North Americas own gas is running out or too expensive. However it plans to buy in from abroad. The U.S. is already on track to be the biggest LNG consumer in the world by the end of 2010.

According to some analysts, within five years, LNG imports to the United States could provide the country with as much as 16 percent of its natural gas, up from just 3 percent today.

Once the really more efficient liquid natural gas technology really comes online, that means the equivalent of an extra 1.7 billion barrels of oil per year!

Up until recently, trapping natural gas, converting it to LNG, and transporting it has not been economic compared to oil extraction. But the US government has looked, and is backing LNG initiatives. Suddenly giant energy companies like Shell Oil, and ExxonMobil Corp are ready to invest $250 billion into the future of LNG and lock in trade deals with countries rich in cheap gas, like Quatar where the largest natural gas fields in the world lie.

Liquid natural gas is not environmentally popular in the West at present. There are worries about its environmental impact and capacity for explosion. However this is likely to change fast. Supporters argue the fact a LNG spillage,(unlike an oil slick) simply dissipates into the air .

The cold LNG is kept under much lower pressures than natural gas, so the problems and dangers of high pressure pumping and release are largely removed. Terminals can be built in remote areas away from population centers.

The safety record of LNG transportation is much better than that of oil; insurance premiums won’t inflate costs.

Natural gas can also be used to power electricity power plants. The U.S., Europe, China, and India are all desperate for more oil and electricity. Estimates say that by 2025, we will have to use twice as much as we do now. Fuelling power plants with LNG will provide cheap electricity for years to come. Does this suggest a good investment?

Everyone around the world is concerned about the high prices of gasoline and diesel. This is a primary factor affecting the economy every where. All of our budgets are impacted by the rising gas prices.

These are just a few of the important tips to know. I have been researching different finds of fuel saving products on the market today some that work and some that do not. I found myself buying into those wildly outrageous claims of “I can show you how to save a whopping 28% on your gas mileage?” I have really done my homework on this. I have become a fountain of knowledge on the subject.

Do not get sucked into these ridiculous claims make sure that the product you are choosing to use is EPA registered and the claims of how many miles per gallon more your car should be getting are realistic . In 2003 I wrote an article about high gas prices in North America. Here we are on the cusp of 2007 and the price at the pump is vastly higher. This is not a surprising turn of events when we look at all the reasons for the high gas prices we are paying at the pump and on our heating bills.

The usual rational bandied about by people suffering under high prices is the idea that the oil and gas companies themselves are fixing the pricing system. If you ask ten people why gas prices are high the majority will find this as reason number one. But is it completely true?

Most Canadians love to lay the blame of High Gas Prices on the taxes applied at the pump, and how the oil companies gouge the consumer but they and the media in Canada are overlooking the more important issues and causes for the price increases.

In Canada, most are unaware that the National Energy Policy, or NEP, has been gutted in the advance of free trade. No longer can the Canadian government try to establish Canadian pricing for oil and gas that is manufactured, refined and sold in Canada. We completely ceded that ability when we signed onto NAFTA.

What this means is that Canada now has little to no control over our own supplies and domestic pricing. During the free trade negotiations the Mexican negotiators had enough forethought to balk at the American proposal to write into law that both Canada and Mexico must hand over a full two thirds of all of our natural gas production. This leaves Canadians paying world market rates for something that they themselves export.

Right now Canada ships some two million barrels of oil a day south; yet we cannot do anything about setting national pricing structures, thanks to Mulroney and Chrétien and their free trade agreements.

This is not the whole story though. Even if we Canadians were to abrogate NAFTA which is our right under the agreement, we may have already given away too much of our dwindling resource.

In 1997 there were 41 large Canadian petroleum companies doing business in Canada. Today there are only six. Of the 35 that no longer exist, U.S. companies bought out 21. This is a disturbing trend of foreign takeovers of Canadian natural resources. Canadians no longer have a majority interest over their own energy resource base.

Sadly, this is only going to get worse and never better. As more of Canada’s energy resources are sold off to foreign corporations at 80 cents on the dollar with no democratic oversight whilst being coupled with an ever-shrinking resource, expect higher and higher prices.

Now couple this loss of domestic capacity and oversight with the burgeoning oil and gas use by many parts of the world, and we can easily foreshadow the ongoing energy crunch. The United States is still the world’s largest user of oil and gas and there is little suggesting that they will change course on that issue any time soon. Not to be overlooked though is the upcoming powerhouse users of China and India. Both of those nations are undergoing their own industrial and economic revolutions. They will both demand more and more of the world’s shortening supply only exacerbating the current situation. Add in Middle East turmoil and uncertainty as we see now and all bets are off as to just how high or how unstable pricing will be in 2007 and beyond.
